I came here to ask for the same thing: I love the idea of the mod, but right now it degrades things so fast I feel like all it takes is walking over a patch of dirt three times and it is bare rock...

There's roughly 14 steps between Grass 1 and Sand 1. So while tiles do seem to change rapidly, each step is relatively subtle. If you're not playing in multiplayer, the wear rate can be adjusted by altering line 1 of control.lua

(hopefully) reviving this discussion, as I would also like to see this get implemented, as adjusting the control.lua myself isn't feasible, since I like to run this mod on servers, where every user would have to adjust it by themselves.
Implementing it should only require a few lines in settings.lua (add a map setting of type integer) and a few small changes in control.lua, that is, just using the added setting in whatever place was a fixed number for it before. also, adding a localization for it.
