I'm trying to figure out which steam trains have 3 coal slots rather than one for long-haul journeys where it may run out of fuel part way on 50 coal.
A bit late, but I believe you're expected to use Coke for those. You could also add a tender car with additional fuel and have a fuel stop, where an inserter grabs from the tender and inserts into the engine
