Windowed Cameras

Keep an eye on different parts of the map in small windows (viewports), without obstructing the rest of the game.

I know it's possible to link to entities like players.
But if they are working on the world map, via roboports and they are just standing in the same spot for 8 hours that's quite the boring stream to watch.
Is it possible to track their "entity's cursor" so i can actually see what they are up to?

Set up a camera to see what my mate's doing while we play together but damn he doesn't move, so it's pointless rofl

The idea behind this mod is nice tho. Immediately pulled me in cuz it's like second display for a gamer, inside the game :D and we all know how amazing that feels.

Thanks for the suggestion, I agree that it will be a good feature to have.

This does need some significant effort to make, but it is feasible. I can see 3 ways of how it would work:

  1. Follow the other player's position in remote view and sync to their zoom level. Downside is because the windowed canera is usually much smaller than their entire screen, you can only see the center part of their view, which may not contain what they are interacting with.
  2. Same as above, but zoom out to cover their entire view area. Downside is everything will be very small.
  3. Follow their entity selection cursor. Downside is that the camera will have frequent sudden jumps. And I don't have a good idea of what to do when they aren't hovering over any entity, Factorio doesn't allow mods to just read their cursor coordinates, only the entity being hovered on.

What do you think?

Ye i thought this could be a bit tricky.

All all those ideas have some use cases. Maybe having all three could be possible, but I wouldn't ask that from you :D
In the end I leave it up to you if you go thru with it, I feel like you would have a better judgment about it especially while working it, you would see it more if you didn't like one of the approaches.

My idea after reading yours is,
Cam could follow the player's entity. If they activate remote view, the cam could switch to following that, zoomed in the center, however if they hover over an entity for a long amount of time it could zoom in on that place so it won't miss the action completely?

I liked the second option the most, but i'm not sure how small the actual thing would look, it might be a mess as I haven't seen how it would look like, you might be right it would be way too small to see anything. It would definitely be more interesting than watching a lil engineer stand in the same place for 12 hours while a factory magically grows around them :D

Sorry for the late response, the PoE league came out and kept me occupied away from the factory haha
As soon as I started playing again I had a flashback of me writing this suggestion and was curious if you answered or not.
