Textureless: Retro Pixel Nostalgia

by kikiala

Downscales non-UI graphics to 1/8th size. This mod was made by hand in a flickering terminal using ffmpeg and bash, mostly.

FAQ

Goals

  • (Achieved) Remaining a content-only texture replacement pack, at least for this mod URL.
  • (Achieved) Automated build process in a single hand-written bash script, leaning heavily on ffmpeg for DSP.
  • (Achieved) Enjoying the game in a fun, low-stim kind of way. Crunchy pixel make brain happy. Can't explain.
  • (???) Improving pre-atlas-cache load times considerably, but that's just my feeling and I didn't measure it.

Why?

  • I am an old terminal witch who likes pixel art. I grew up playing DOS and NES games. Nostalgia. :)
  • Other texture mod-packs focus on concepts like "quality" or "resolution" - why not go the other way?
  • The original reason for this mod was due to my eyesight problems. Too much detail actually causes fatigue.
  • Happily, this mod helps me enjoy the game again and focus on the gameplay without being overwhelmed by its resplendant beauty.
