The variable connection_distance in [the mod zip]\trainmod1\prototype\entity\steam_locomotive.lua is set to 2.5, change it to 3 (what it is for vanilla locomotives). Getting the water pumps to connect to the steam locomotive might be a tad more finnicky, but the mod otherwise works fine.
