Hi!

For base game (not SA) and with default enemies - the Railgun Artillery (RA) is more alternative skin with high shooting speed.

For Space Age game - using of RA is a logical part of the railgun turret technology, which already been introduced by the developers.

With any custom enemies - for example, rampant's mod ... the RA is an effective way to stop the spread of enemy colonization and reducing the number of biter's nests )

For the late game, it also encourages you to use more electricity.

I see, it is a sort of Rapid firing Artillery that uses electricity?

Yeap, late game rapid firing artillery, you're right.

In real life the railgun technology has some disadvantages:

  • immense power requirements. Firing a railgun requires a massive surge of electricity—often the output of a small power plant—in a fraction of a second. A vehicle or ship would need a revolutionary power system and capacitors.

  • barrel wear. The electromagnetic forces and friction involved are so extreme that they can destroy the rails after just a few shots. Developing durable materials is a huge hurdle.

  • guidance. A projectile traveling at hypersonic speeds through the atmosphere experiences plasma buildup (which blocks radio signals) and immense heat and G-forces. Designing guidance systems that can survive and function is a major challenge.

Dang that was informative.
So i guess we do not any as of now in the military.
But does the railgun technology have advantages in real life?

The US Navy's investment in railgun technology currrently partly is done and there are some results =) One of sound is recorded from irl tests)
Advantages:

  • the projectiles can be launched at hypersonic speeds (mach 5+).
  • higher range - chemical impacts have limits.
  • high fire rate - in theory... )
