One big thing about the voidforge is that only voidforges can really help you with science, because only they can get you voidcraft science packs, either by directly voidcrafting them, or indirectly by producing void shards as a byproduct of other crafting. That said, when I played, I kept voidsheds around for a while mostly to pump out stone and ore to keep building more voidforges.
Another useful trick for early game is that the boiler and steam engine have a pretty nice buffer. You can have a voidforge doing hydromancy for a few seconds, then switch it over to something else for a while, so you don't have to have a voidforge sitting there useless 99% of the time because you're not using very much water. Later on, you may not need hydromancy at all, because Void Block adds a chemical plant recipe that turns void ocean into usable water.
