Each tree eats a tiny bit of pollution over time. So the more trees you have the quicker your pollution levels will reduce. However this is normally so small that a big factory can easily overpower a massive forest.
This mod has a startup setting which allows you to tweak how much pollution the trees eat.
This mod does not allow you to plant trees but rather makes them spread over time.
And yes you can add and remove this mod without any issue.
