Had the same experience as well. Would it be possile to make this feature a toggleable option on the world map layer?
I think it could be helpful to not loose too many drones early game against up to medium spitters, but against large spitters it needs to be turned off unless mining drones could get researched stronger (or military drones with guns and ammo could be developed)
I think the idea of a flee AI (returnes all drones of the same hub for 15 seconds) might also be enough as it would lure the enemies into your defense. all so often the spitters are just barely out of range.
