currently, i am using this mod, Klonan's Mining Drones, and also Klonan's Construction Drones, and they all work nicely together.
as a result, i now have a big Compilatron char as the boss, a few swarms of compilatron miners and one swarm of compilatron constructors :-)

btw: there is another mod that changes the char into the Gear Girl (https://mods.factorio.com/mod/GirlCharacter). i think they currently work on making it configurable so that in multiplayer one player can use the male and another can use the female char. it would be nice if in addition a third player also would be able to play with a neutral bot (this mod). would it somehow be possible to join efforts and make it all compatible and selectable) with each other, and maybe even with future alternate chars too ?

minime has a GUI now so that you can choose from any characters the mod has recognized at any time. There is an issue with "Gear Girl Character", because it always overwrites the base character instead of making a second entity. So at least one other character must be active (the GUI will only be created if at least two characters have been found) -- "I, Robot" does work, by the way. :-)
