Fixed with version 0.18 and 0.17, please update the mod :)
There is a new recipe for engine unit available at the start.

Yes it's normal, there are two recipes, one that uses steel and bronze and another that uses nickel plates, once you have unlocked the engines I recommend you to build engines from nickel .
