I found this mod as I was looking for something exactly like this, however what I was truly looking for was the ability to set the icon using a circuit condition.

This would allow item count and displays to be made with very little setup, simply a plug and play model. I'd already managed to create a plug and play counter however it wasn't as useful as the icon for the counter would still need to be selected.

I've not coded mods for Factorio before so I'm completely unaware of how difficult this would be, but I'd assume the nixie tube mod would be a good reference on how to implement what circuit icon to display based on how the nixie tube mod handles it.
