You start on a space platform with the bare minimum stuff to start automating, and basic resources are obtained from asteroids. heavy oil is obtained through simple coal liquefaction (sulfur is obtained from advanced carbonic crushing, calcite through advanced oxide crushing and coal through coal synthesis) Your final goal is to create thrusters to leave the solar system (reach the solar system edge).
