Sorry for the late reply, I finally found time to look into this.
Seems like this is a duplicate issue to yours, yet I still am not 100% sure on what you do.
The other issue can be reproduced by opening any blueprint (right-click), choosing new contents (that blue plus button you mentioned) and marking a display plate with a set icon. If selecting an empty display instead, nothing should crash. Does this sound like your issue?
If this is a duplicate indeed, I'll have a wrapper preventing the crash in the next release. Sadly, updating blueprints including icons and map markers that way won't be possible even with it, because Factorio handles blueprint updates the way it does.
