Underground fluid storage tanks with much greater capacity for their footprint.

Base game storage tank is 3x3 squares and holds 25,000 Units.
Costs 20 Iron, 5 Steel and 3 Seconds to build.

Underground variants from this mod:

4x4 = 256,000 Units. 25 Steel, 16 Underground Pipes, 35 Concrete, 16 Seconds
5x5 = 400,000 Units. 40 Steel, 20 Underground Pipes, 55 Concrete, 25 Seconds
6x6 = 576,000 Units. 60 Steel, 36 Underground Pipes, 80 Concrete, 36 Seconds

Construction cost and time scales with capacity but does not require special research. Construction recipes unlock with Fluid Handling.

Capacity is calculated from scaling-up the volume of the regular storage tank, then underground tanks also extend to a depth of 4 squares, which brings us to...

Important things to note:

  1. You need pumps to get any fluids you put in, back out again. Because...
  2. The tanks ARE below ground. Any connected fluids will flow with gravity to the lowest point in the system first, and Factorio simulates this.
  3. Pumps need to be connected directly to the tanks. No pipe segments in between.
  4. I threw this together in a weekend and it's my first Factorio mod. I'm confident it's working well, but I haven't extensively playtested it yet.

To Do (maybe):

  1. Figure-out how to stop underground pipes/belts from building through/under the tanks.
  2. Come-up with a better mod logo.
  3. See how easy it would be to put a capacity indicator on the tanks.
